Alpaca Fiber is incredibly strong, durable and luxurious. Collected annually by shearing as you would sheep, alpacas can produce five to eight pounds of fleece a year. Industries revolving around hand-spinning and weaving domestic fiber can purchase fleece for quailty production from Crosswinds Farm.

My What An Unusually
Colored Sweater You Have

This statement is common. Alpacas can be seen in over 22 original colors. However, the ability for the fleece to be dyed is a plus! Fleece readily accepts most dye combinations. A relatively rare and special fiber, approximately 4000 tons are produced each year and less than 1% of this is produced in North America. Alpaca farming and breeding is still a new venture in North America. Attributes like brilliance of sheen, delicate feel, and supple yet strong fibers are qualities of Alpaca fleece. Desired for these qualities and ingenuity of microscopic air pockets that insulate and protect an Alpaca, make excellent choices for apparel. Known as a "breathable" fiber, Alpaca wool is light weight and insulates for year round wear.

A "micron" is the measurement of Alpaca wool.  A typical alpaca micron will measure between 15-24 microns.  Cashmere at its fineness measures 20 microns.  Other wool products are in the 30s.  This proves the fineness of the Alpaca wool.  Holding its place in the world market of competitors, raising Alpacas for their fleece remains a viable business venture for today and the future.

Most people find they are not allergic to the fleece and can comfortably wear pure Alpaca next to their skin. An allergic reaction may be noticed when combined with dying fleece. Those interested in developing their own herd may review the investment ratio in the section of Opportunities.
